Police say Gastonia English teacher gave anti-anxiety pills to student

Police in Gaston County are claiming that a high school teacher gave prescription anti-anxiety pills to a student. As the pills are a controlled substance, the teacher is now facing multiple drug charges. However, she has no prior criminal record in North Carolina.

Allegedly, the 31-year-old English teacher gave the prescription pills to a student. The student then supposedly sold those pills to other students, sharing the profits with the teacher. The allegations, though, were prompted by an anonymous tip, which may call into question the truthfulness of the claims. Also, a subsequent investigation reportedly showed that the teacher only gave four of the pills to the student.

The small amount of medication may indicate that the matter is simply a misunderstanding. Nonetheless, the teacher is now facing a number of criminal charges. These include possession of a controlled substance with the intent to sell or deliver, using a minor to commit a controlled substance offense, and conspiracy to sell or deliver a controlled substance. Gaston County police took her into custody on March 29, although she has since been released after posting a $15,000 bond.

Here, prosecutors may have difficulty proving that the woman had a criminal intent. Even if she gave the pills to the student, that does not necessarily mean she intended for the student to then sell the pills to other students. Indeed, the prescription medication is used in the treatment of seizures and anxiety disorders, and may be used for legitimate purposes. The teacher will likely consider these issues as she fights the charges against her.
