North Carolina man arrested on drug charges for bag found by car

A North Carolina man has been charged with several drug offenses related to a bag found near his car. Police assert that the man stopped short of a license checking station they had set up north of Maysville on US 17. After a Jones County deputy initiated a traffic stop, the man found himself in jail on drug charges.

The traffic stop took place in a driveway. The man was said to be walking away from the vehicle when the deputy stopped him. The deputy's preliminary identification of the man apparently showed that he had a revoked drivers license and was wanted for drug related offenses in two counties.

As the man was taken into custody, a bag was discovered on the ground next to the vehicle. A search of the bag's contents revealed what officers believed to be marijuana, crack cocaine and powder cocaine. The man was charged with a long list of charges dealing with the trafficking, possession with intent to manufacture, possession with intent to sell and deliver both marijuana and cocaine. He was also accused of maintaining a vehicle for controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving with a revoked license.

In this country, every individual accused of a crime is deemed innocent in the eyes of the law unless and until they are proven guilty in court. As this case moves forward through the North Carolina criminal justice system, the burden of proof will be squarely on the shoulders of the prosecution. While it often appears easy to condemn someone based on what is contained in a news report, the law requires quite a bit more before a conviction can be obtained. In view of the seriousness of the drug charges and the potential for a prison sentence if a conviction is obtained, the accused man would do well to seek help in ensuring his legal rights are protected while he fights to contest the allegations against him.
