Golf cart driver facing felony charges after run-in at US Open

It may sound like the opening line of a joke, but in fact it's a true story and a serious one at that: A man is facing felony charges in North Carolina after allegedly driving a golf cart over a state trooper's foot at the U.S. Open. The golf car driver has been charged with impaired driving and a number of other offenses in connection with the incident.

The 59-year-old defendant was reportedly driving the golf cart for an NBC reporter who was there reporting on the golf tournament. They were leaving the tee area when the driver allegedly ran over the foot of a North Carolina State Trooper who was on site assisting with security.

The trooper then chased after the golf cart, yelling at the driver to stop. Eventually, he caught up with the cart and climbed on, then handcuffed the driver and placed him under arrest.

It is unclear at this point whether the driver knew as he was driving away that there was a law enforcement officer shouting at him to stop. If he intentionally disobeyed the officer, that could have more serious consequences than the alleged collision would have had on its own.

The driver is reportedly facing charges for a string of alleged offenses, including felony DWI, hit and run, assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, and obstructing and delaying a law enforcement officer.

If he is convicted, he could face potential prison time, steep fines, driver's license suspension and other penalties. The trooper was treated for a minor leg injury at the medical trailer and then released.
