Can Carolina Panther Greg Hardy go to jail if convicted?

Much has been written about the Hardy trial that starts today, and the ramifications to his professional football career.

He does also face a possible jail sentence of 60 days if convicted of the Assault on a Female, even if he has no prior convictions.  NC law allows a sentencing judge to impose a jail sentence on a Class A1 misdemeanor, such as this Assault on Female.  While it is more likely that he would be sentenced to probation + batterers' counseling if convicted, the judge does nonetheless have the discretion to put him in jail.

The batterers' program is rather intensive and could substantially interfere with his pro ball career.  A conviction would also require under Federal Law that he not possess a firearm, such as the ones that he is alleged to have piled up on his futon.
