Accident in inclement weather leads to drunk driving charges

Operating a motor vehicle during inclement weather can be dangerous. Should an accident occur under similar circumstances, police may still choose to initiate an investigation into the incident, which in some cases may lead to suspicions of the presence of wrong-doing. A 43-year-old man has recently been accused of drunk driving after colliding with a utility pole during a storm in North Carolina.

Authorities say the accident took place during a recent heavy rainstorm, when a vehicle crashed into a utility pole. Upon speaking with the driver, an officer asserts the man was exhibiting signs of intoxication, such as slurred speech. They proceeded to search the vehicle, which allegedly uncovered the presence of four empty bottles of vanilla extract. Authorities say that, according to the label, the contents contained 35 percent alcohol.

According to police, the man admitted to mixing the extract with milk and drinking it before driving. He submitted to a Breathalyzer test, which allegedly indicated his blood alcohol content to be .26, which is well over the legal limit to operate a motor vehicle. He was taken into custody soon thereafter, and is facing numerous charges in relation to the incident, including driving while intoxicated and speeding.

Drunk driving charges potentially carry severe consequences, and a conviction could have a significant impact on a person's life. Those accused of a similar crime may wish to protect themselves by focusing on their defense, potentially prompting a need to seek guidance from an experienced attorney. An attorney in North Carolina can evaluate the circumstances a client is facing and provide advice on the best course of action to take during subsequent legal proceedings.
