"Ghost" cars will now be used to prevent drunk driving

Impaired driving is a serious issue across the United States, and many regional and state authorities have tried different tactics to address the issue. In North Carolina, State Highway Patrol officers have adopted a new tool to help them combat drunk driving in the state. These new low-key vehicles, known as "ghost" patrol cars, were unveiled in April 2018.

The "ghost" car is a Dodge Charger and is similar to the regular marked and unmarked Chargers currently used by North Carolina State Highway Patrol. However, unlike these other vehicles, the words "State Trooper" along the side of the new cars is glow-in-the-dark. During the daytime, the dark grey words are less visible against the car's grey background.

These discreetly marked cars are already being used to address drunk driving in Pennsylvania, Louisiana and Florida. The specs of the car, like a V-8 engine and all-wheel drive, are familiar to state police and are designed to aid in chases if needed. The highway patrol plans for each of the eight troops across the state to have access to one of the vehicles.

The State Highway Patrol is making a great deal of noise about its new vehicles, even releasing a dramatic video of the cars on Facebook with the tagline "Drunk drivers beware the ghost car." State Highway Patrol officers are often involved in arrests and enforcements related to driving under the influence. Those drunk driving charges may turn on a patrolman's testimony in a trial. To better understand state authorities' tools and tactics as well as North Carolina law and defence options, those facing drunk driving charges should contact a defense attorney in the state.
