Five arrested for drunk driving July Fourth in Cleveland County

According to a survey from, the Fourth of July is the biggest beer-drinking holiday in the United States. Police were out in full force in many parts of North Carolina to address drunk driving during this year's festivities. In Cleveland County, five people were arrested on July 4, 2018, after allegedly driving under the influence.

One of the people arrested was a 20-year-old, meaning he faced charges for driving after consuming under 21 as well as DWI. He was arrested after blowing a 0.04 and telling police he had taken Clonazepam. In North Carolina, a driver is considered impaired after blowing over 0.08 or being considered too impaired to drive by authorities. People under 21 cannot drink at all before operating a vehicle.

Two of the other arrestees blew 0.14 and 0.19 respectively. Another man was arrested after he stumbled through a sobriety test and was considered impaired by officers. Although he was unable to give a breathalyzer sample, his blood was drawn for alcohol levels.

According to the Governor's Highway Safety Program, 135 people in North Carolina lost their lives due to crashes where drunk driving played a role between January to early July 2018. Cleveland County alone has seen at least 19 deaths resulting from 17 fatal drunk driving collisions, though most could be added to this count once toxicology reports come in.
