North Carolina police make fewer DUI arrests than last year

Throughout the year, North Carolina police are on the lookout for drivers who might be operating under the influence of alcohol. This usually leads to thousands of DUI arrests every year. However, local authorities are crediting awareness campaigns for a drop in this year's arrests.

Operation Firecracker ran from June 27 to July 10. This campaign aimed to decrease the number of drunk driving related fatalities. When the program ran during the 2017 summer months, police made 1,449 arrests. This year, they only arrested 1,373 drivers -- 76 less than last year.

Not only did the 2018 Operation Firecracker see a moderate reduction in arrests, state Department of Transportation officials say that overall DUI arrests for the entire year are also lower than average. Although it is possible that police officers are just missing some of the intoxicated drivers on the road, experts do not believe this is the case. Instead, they say the lower arrest rate is because drivers are taking note of the awareness campaigns and choosing alternate methods to get home or refraining from alcohol entirely.

North Carolina police officers are constantly on the lookout for potentially intoxicated drivers. This scrutiny is increased during annual safety campaigns, which can lead to more DUI arrests. Defendants who are accused of driving under the influence of alcohol often lose their driving privileges even if they are never convicted. Requesting an administrative hearing in a timely manner is essential for defendants who hope to retain those privileges so that they can continue traveling to and from work, school and other important engagements.
