Off-duty North Carolina police officer charged with DWI

Police officers in North Carolina are often willing to sacrifice a great deal -- including their own personal safety -- to protect others. Despite this willingness, their choice to enforce the law often leaves them facing additional scrutiny if they find themselves facing accusations of a crime. In fact, the news is reporting on an off-duty officer who was recently charged with DWI.

The incident that led to the officer's arrest happened during the early morning hours of a day in late February. A trooper with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol reportedly spotted a driver who was speeding. Reports claim that the driver was traveling 61 mph in an area with a 45 mph speed limit.

Though it is unclear what made the trooper suspect that the driver -- who was both in a personal vehicle and off-duty -- was under the influence, the driver reportedly had a blood alcohol content of .08. As a result, he was charged with speeding and driving while intoxicated. He is on administrative duty until an internal investigation can be completed.

Any sort of criminal charge, including an allegation of DWI, can have serious personal and professional consequences. Unfortunately, some measures of blood alcohol content are subject to human error. While all people facing such charges in North Carolina will likely want to carefully examine the evidence in their case, it is likely especially true for someone who has results so close to the legal limit. An attorney with experience with such cases can help challenge the validity of this type of evidence.
