Driver of lawnmower in North Carolina charged with DWI

When approached by a law enforcement officer in North Carolina, many people may not fully understand their rights. For example, it is often in a person's best interests to decline to speak with an officer when he or she is suspected of a crime until an attorney is present. Unfortunately, a man now faces accusations of DWI, driving while impaired, after an encounter with police officers.

Reports indicate that the 61-year-old man was driving a lawn mower during the late night hours of a day in early May. According to officers, the man had blood on his face and hands. He allegedly told officers that he was injured when he fell from his mower.

The man is said to have told officers that he was driving his lawnmower to the store to purchase more beer. Police claim that when they asked him how drunk he was on a scale of zero to 10, the man indicated that he was a nine. He was transported to the hospital where he was treated for his injuries, and he consented to a blood draw.

As a result of the alleged incident, the man is now charged with DWI. Though he reportedly has a criminal history, his last conviction was approximately five years ago. Regardless of claims made by police officers, people in North Carolina and across the country are considered not guilty unless and until sufficient evidence is provided to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. To help the man create an appropriate response to the charges he is facing, he may choose to consult with an attorney with experience with such cases.
